Things have changed drastically in children's swimwear since we were small. No longer can babies toddle around in ruffled bikinis and skimpy baby speedos: long swim shorts, rash guard shirts and/or surf suits are expected now as a minimum amount of protection against fierce, cancer-causing Mr. Sun. As a matter of course, we slather the little guys down with non-chemical, SPF 50 sunscreen whenever they go outside for a walk, and they have a growing wardrobe of hats to protect their little bald heads. Whatever other dangers and diseases they may face from growing up in an increasingly toxic world, at least they won't have to worry about middle-age melanoma developing from countless childhood sunburns. To that end, here they model their new surf suits (I'll spare them the embarrassment of being photographed in their floppy swim hats). We look forward to lots of splashing opportunities this summer: our local Red Hook Pool, the pool at Deb's parents' house, the beach, the lake at our friends' house upstate, a visit to Grandpa Karl in Arizona with 3 pools for swimming fun...the list goes on. Now that they're outfitted in cute, quick-drying suits, we just need to invest in swim diapers (a VERY important concept - keeps everything exactly where it should be, not leaking into some poor unsuspecting person's pool water) and fluffy pool towels. And maybe a beach ball...
As an aside, you can also see in these photos how well they can sit unsupported, only cushioned against potential head-bumping should they lose their balance, which happens less now. And you can see how much they enjoy looking at their little board books and trying to turn the pages...this book is called "Yummy, Yucky". It's a helpful guide for babies, who tend to think everything is yummy until proven otherwise...
